ORIGINS VOL.8: FADO GUITAR & CAVAQUINHO
The smooth slides and glistening metallic plucks of the fado guitar always accompany the “sung sadness” of fado music. The guitar carries an otherworldly energy that easily breeches the sounds of sorrow with those of delight. When paired with the Cavaquinho, it creates an unparalleled exuberance with a certain festive quality.
“The fado guitar has this really cool energetic vibe,” notes Olajide Paris, the project lead, “It’s almost like a European banjo because it’s played with these finger picks. And the Cavaquinho makes me think of the samba school in Brazil, and dancing and liveliness.”
Olajide had fallen in love with the fado guitar some time ago, though ended up breaking it repeatedly before giving up on playing it. The enchanting tone though captured his imagination. “I like the timbre a lot and there really aren’t a lot of samples for it,” he says. The Cavaquinho he’s also liked for a long time, and thought they would make for an amazing pair for the ORIGINS series.
Olajide looked up his Brazilian friend, Gabriel Dib, to perform the recordings at a studio in LA. “They’re both very hard to play,” Olajide said. “If you’re not practiced, your fingers won’t stand up to the stress.”
