Create Scores that Last

Do you remember the first time you sat in a cinema and the hairs on the back of your neck stood up? When the music gave you goosebumps before a single word was spoken. Film score has the power to excite us, to move us, and to supercharge the story. Some of the most classic films are inseparable from their scores. Perhaps it was the opening brass fanfare of Star Wars, the menacing low strings of Jaws, or the magical shimmer as E.T. and Elliott flew across the moon. Those sounds did not just accompany the story, they became part of the memory.

That is the experience LUX Orchestral Strings is built to capture.

What Makes LUX Special

LUX Orchestral Strings was created with a composer’s workflow in mind. We crafted the sound and developed unique techniques to deliver the most natural playing and composing experience. Switch effortlessly between articulation sets tailored to different styles and keep your creativity flowing. Discover a sound so authentic, it feels like you’re standing right in the heart of the orchestra.

S.A.T. – Seamless Articulation Transitioning
In most libraries, articulation changes sound like separate recordings, not a continuous performance. Real musicians play differently – they flow naturally from one technique to another. A sustained note becomes a tremolo simply by increasing bow speed, without any break or restart.

S.A.T. brings that fluid motion to LUX. Move between articulations while holding a note, letting phrases evolve with the natural expressiveness of real performance. A gentle key switch creates a gradual shift, a stronger one a quick change – giving you true instrumental flow at your fingertips.

Notes connect smoothly, allowing you to perform more naturally instead of switching between static samples. It feels musical, not mechanical.

70-Player String Ensemble

LUX Orchestral Strings is huge, not a small chamber group, not a cut-down studio section, but a full 70-piece symphonic string ensemble recorded with the size and power that defined the golden age of Hollywood film scores.

It delivers the perfect balance for modern scoring: bigger and richer than smaller 30 – 40 player sections, yet more detailed and versatile than oversized 90+ ensembles. It captures the cinematic weight of world-class film recordings while retaining clarity, flexibility, and expressive nuance. Ideal for any professional composer.

Comprehensive Bleed Microphones
– Done Right

Only a few libraries offer a bleed option, and usually only in a limited way. With LUX Orchestral Strings we wanted to capture the true experience of a full orchestral scoring session, so we took it much further.

In total we set up 48 microphones. 26 were used for the main capture — tree, far, and close mics for the string sections. On top of that we added another 22 close bleed microphones across the brass, woodwinds and percussion sections to record their natural spill into the strings. This recreated the complete orchestral recording setup, with every mic you would expect to find on a professional scoring stage.

Resonance That Lives and Breathes
With LUX Orchestral Strings you can choose how much of that natural spill you want in your mix, from just a touch of color to the full character of the scoring stage. The result is bleed that does not feel like an added effect, but like the resonance and interplay of a real orchestra in the room. Other libraries hint at it. LUX Orchestral Strings delivers it in full.

Infuse your mix with the authentic resonance of a live orchestra, giving your music depth, realism, and emotional impact.

“I could not believe the sound coming out of the speakers, it really felt like I was in the room conducting a string orchestra.”

John Enroth • Composer
Thor: Ragnarok • 21 Jump Street

Morphing Articulations – Evolving Sounds in Real Time

LUX Orchestral Strings lets you do something sample libraries rarely achieve — shape articulations as if they were alive. Using the mod wheel, you can blend seamlessly between two or more articulations in real time. Sustains can melt into tremolos, sul ponticello textures can swell into shimmering atmospheres, and a staccato can transform into a powerful sforzando with a single movement.

Give your writing a sense of evolution and breath, turning static patches into living performances that respond to your touch.

Composer-Crafted Ensembles – Instant Inspiration

When inspiration strikes, speed is everything. LUX Orchestral Strings offers carefully crafted ensembles, designed by composers who understand true orchestral balance. Sketch soaring melodies or driving rhythms in seconds, then refine them into detailed individual parts at your own pace. Flexible voicing and octave options ensure a full, lush sound, ideal for quick sketches or powerful supporting layers. These ensembles are not shortcuts, they are inspiration engines.

With LUX Orchestral Strings, you stay in the creative flow – turning ideas into rich, authentic orchestral music without breaking momentum.

“Whatever you need to score, whatever you need to write strings for, LUX will cover it.”

Stephen Gallagher • Composer
LOTR – The War Of The Rohirrim / The Beatles: Get Back / District 9

Key Switch Sets
For Every Musical Context

LUX introduces something no other library offers, dedicated Key Switch sets tailored to specific scoring needs. Whether you are writing an action sequence, a lyrical theme, a soft texture, or a melodic passage, you can load a single set that contains all the articulations you need for that context.

This approach transforms workflows: it keeps you in the flow of composition and ensures the library bends to your needs, not the other way around.

Natural String Change
–
Legato with the soul of a player

Real string players do not cut notes short when leaping across intervals. As the bow moves, the previous string lingers, resonating just a moment longer and giving the phrase its natural flow. It is a small detail, but it is what makes live performance so moving. For LUX Orchestral Strings, violinist and developer Jonas Meyer created Natural String Change technology, a system that detects when the next note would fall on a different string and allows the previous one to breathe into it.

The result is legato that feels effortless and alive. Wide intervals and arpeggiated figures connect with the same grace and humanity you would expect from real players on stage.

The innovations set LUX Orchestral Strings apart, but the full feature set is just as impressive:

Charli Mackie • Composer

Pro Stage

Every note was captured on a large concert stage chosen for its natural warmth and scale. The seating was arranged in traditional symphonic layout, with each section positioned exactly as it would be on the scoring stage. This ensures the sound is not just accurate, but cinematic in every sense – wide, immersive, and balanced so it sits perfectly in any cinematic production without the need for additional processing.

Pro Engineers

To record LUX Orchestral Strings, we collaborated with StarRecordings productions and with award-winning score mixer Peter Fuchs, whose work spans over 400 films like Iron Man 3, Now You See Me and games, including Harry Potter, Call Of Duty and more. His meticulous approach allowed even challenging techniques, such as whisper legato, to be captured with remarkable precision, ensuring that LUX Orchestral Strings delivers unmatched clarity and expressiveness for composers.

Pro Gear

For the recording sessions, only the finest professional gear was chosen to capture every nuance of the orchestra. With an arsenal of legendary microphones from DPA, Schoeps, Neumann, Coles, and more, the recordings deliver unmatched clarity, depth, and realism. This world-class setup ensures that every bow stroke, resonance, and subtle detail is preserved, giving composers the most authentic and inspiring virtual string library possible.

The result is an orchestral string ensemble that does not feel like it was assembled on a computer, but one that plays as a living, breathing instrument. Whether you are writing delicate textures or unleashing full fortissimo chords, LUX Orchestral Strings gives you the unmistakable presence of a true scoring orchestra.

Frequentky Asked Questions

How is LUX Orchestral Strings different from other string libraries or Sonuscore products like The Orchestra Complete or The Score?

LUX Orchestral Strings is a full-scale, professional orchestral string library designed for composers who want total control and authentic realism. Unlike The Orchestra Complete and The Score, LUX Orchestral Strings does not focus on predesigned arrangements or performances, but on delivering the full expressive range and detail of a real 70-piece string section recorded on a scoring stage. It’s a true composer’s instrument, built for nuanced writing, expressive performance, and cinematic depth.

The Orchestra Complete remains ideal for instantly playable motion and ensemble writing, and The Score offers curated, pre-orchestrated performances across a wide range of instruments. LUX Orchestral Strings complements them by providing the pure, uncoloured sound and flexibility of a flagship orchestral string library. During development, we worked with composers who already owned The Score and The Orchestra Complete, and all felt that LUX Orchestral Strings greatly expanded their toolkit rather than replacing anything.

If I already own a high-end string library, why would I add LUX Orchestral Strings?

Professional composers who we’ve been working with, talked about LUX Orchestral Strings feeling like conducting a real section and always finding the articulation they need. LUX Orchestral Strings takes realism and musical flow to a new level, through features such as Seamless Articulation Transitioning, Natural String Change Legato, and dedicated bleed microphones that add natural instrument-to-instrument spill. We believe LUX Orchestral Strings sets a new standard for orchestral string libraries.

Do I need special hardware to run LUX Orchestral Strings?

LUX Orchestral Strings is optimised for modern computers. For the best experience with the 70-player section and extensive microphone setup, we recommend an SSD and at least 32 GB of RAM. It will run on leaner machines too. You can choose lighter mic mixes or smaller presets if needed. Please check the System Requirements on this page for full information.

Is LUX Orchestral Strings only for film scoring?

No. The library was recorded and programmed with film, game, and trailer work in mind, but it also fits classical, pop, ambient, and hybrid projects whenever you want convincing orchestral strings with natural space and presence.

Is LUX Orchestral Strings difficult to use?

In true Sonuscore tradition, LUX Orchestral Strings is powerful, not complicated. If you think of an articulation, you can dig in and find it. Key Switch Sets, Seamless Articulation Transitioning, Composer-Crafted Ensembles, and a clear layout keep you writing. Pros get depth and control. Enthusiasts get quick, musical results.

Am I limited to the articulations offered in the Articulation Sets?

No, LUX Orchestral Strings was designed in a very flexible way that also lets you dive deep and create the articulation you always dreamed of. How does it sound when a String Player goes from pp Whisper Sustains to mf Soft Motions all the way to ff Sul Ponticello Tremolo – all in one single articulation? With LUX Orchestral Strings you can make it happen!

How realistic is LUX Orchestral Strings compared with a real orchestra?

From the feedback we’ve received from those who work on real scoring stages LUX Orchestral Strings feels like being back in the room with a string section. LUX Orchestral Strings was recorded in an ambient hall and includes comprehensive bleed microphones to preserve the sense of players sharing a room. Natural String Change Legato supports fluid, hand-played phrasing rather than stitched-together notes.

Can I write full tracks using LUX Orchestral Strings, or is it mainly for layering?

Both. Ensemble instruments let you sketch and build big statements at speed. Section instruments give you the detail for voicing, counterlines, and layering. Many users will sketch with ensembles, refine with sections, then shape space with the mic and bleed options.

How does the sound of LUX Orchestral Strings compare with The Orchestra Complete or The Score?

Think toolset, not replacement. The Orchestra Complete gives instant orchestral motion. The Score brings narrative performances and variety across families. LUX Orchestral Strings is dedicated strings with a larger, more cinematic tone and an expressive response that rewards hand-played lines. They work well together in a single template.

I’m not a professional composer – is LUX Orchestral Strings still right for me?

Yes. If you love writing with orchestral colour, LUX Orchestral Strings is inspiring and approachable, with plenty of depth to grow into.

Will LUX Orchestral Strings replace The Orchestra Complete or The Score in my workflow?

Not necessarily. Many composers will keep The Orchestra Complete for motion and sketching, The Score for its pre-orchestrated performances and broader palette, and LUX Orchestral Strings as the flagship for expressive string writing. Each one has a place.

Does LUX Orchestral Strings include performance features like legato and articulation control?

Yes. You get Natural String Change Legato, Seamless Articulation Transitioning, flexible Key Switch Sets, and a large articulation set highlighted in the promo. It is designed so that if you think of a technique, you’ll probably find it, plus it has many articulations you may never have dreamed of… it’s a lot of jaw-dropping fun!

Can I tailor the room sound?

Yes. LUX Orchestral Strings includes an extensive mic set-up and an additional 20 bleed microphone tracks that capture natural spill for a more believable image. You can run focused and tight, go wide and cinematic, or match other libraries in your template. The mixer section gives you complete control.

What software do I need to use this instrument?
